For many skaters, the love of the sport doesn't stop after age 18, but the opportunities to perform and indulge in the love of soaring on ice are often few and far between for adult figure skaters. Noticing this gap, Founder Cathy Thoms was inspired to create new opportunities for skaters who want to experience the joy of performance, and thus the Theatre on Ice Collective was born.
Now backed by a seasoned team of professional figure skating coaches and entrepreneurs, the Theatre on Ice Collective (TOIC) provides choreography, coaching, and skills training for adult skaters at all levels. Read on to learn more about the professionals behind the curtain.
As one of the original skaters in the first Canada Ice Dance Theatre many years ago, the desire to skate in and create shows has been a part of Cathy since she was a very young girl. Today Cathy still fulfills this passion as an adult skater, competitor, and Senior Sectional judge.
She founded the Theatre on Ice Collective (TOIC) with the first "pop up" show in 2019 under the mentorship of the late Ron Vincent, founder of Canada Ice Dance Theatre. Since then, TOIC has created annual "pop up" shows, giving adult skaters the opportunity to fulfill their own passion for the skating stage.
Outside of skating, Cathy serves as Chief Financial Officer for a Calgary-based startup, expertise which she also brings to the TOIC. Cathy is also a passionate cook, ensuring the cast of TOIC fed very well throughout the show weekend! This is a very self serving initiative for Cathy, one that she hopes others will benefit from and enjoy as much as she does.
Kate's figure skating career has taken her internationally, having started in the United States as a child and then touring across the States into Mexico with Disney on Ice. While pursuing her Engineering degree at McGill university, Kate skated for the school's competitive team. She has been a professional skating coach since moving to Calgary in 2008, coaching skaters from beginner to national-level competitors.
Dedicated to providing fun and inclusive skating environments for young skaters, Kate went on to found the Canada Ice Cinema in 2014, providing weekly technique classes and producing live and video performances. Kate joined the Theatre on Ice Collective at its founding in 2019, sharing Cathy's passion for providing performance opportunities for skaters with a lifelong love of figure skating.
Outside of skating, Kate teaches mathematics in Burnaby, British Columbia, where she hopes to one day offer TOIC's pop-up show opportunities!
